GRAMMY Rewind: Shakira And Wyclef Jean Throw A Bollywood-Inspired Dance Party With Their Performance Of “Hips Don’t Lie” At The GRAMMY Awards In 2007

Two pop legends came together for this gold-dripped, high-energy performance of their GRAMMY-nominated “Hips Don’t Lie” duet on the awards show stage in 2007.

In her Women’s Health cover story from 2014, Shakira said that she knows a song is finished when it makes her start dancing.

“My hips don’t lie! Are they moving? They’re not moving. So this is not ready,” the singer recalled saying in the studio, as she worked on music that wasn’t quite ready for release.

That rule of thumb was the inspiration behind her 2006 mega-hit, “Hips Don’t Lie,” a duet with Wyclef Jean that reimagined Jean’s single “Dance Like This” and quickly snowballed into having a life of its own, topping the charts in 18 different countries.

And when the two artists came together to perform their song at the 49th GRAMMY Awards in 2007, Shakira’s hips certainly weren’t lying: The two artists packed a dazzling, danceable punch onstage, making it one of the most memorable performances in GRAMMYs history.

In this episode of GRAMMY Rewind, and in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s take a look back at Shakira and Jean’s unforgettable live rendition of “Hips Don’t Lie.” Inspired by the aesthetics of Bollywood movies, the performance features a cast of backup dancers dressed in metallic gold outfits and a dazzling, lit-up archway glittering behind the performers.

Shakira’s belly-dancing moves are a major part of the performance, and the singer rocked a gold, midriff-baring two-piece ensemble to highlight that crucial component.

Meanwhile, Jean kept things comparatively casual, rocking upscale tan loungewear. Still, he proved that he was no slouch dance-wise during the duet GRAMMYs performance. While Shakira dazzled with her signature fast-paced belly-dancing moves, Jean briefly stole the spotlight with a casual onstage backflip.

In addition to its performance slot at the GRAMMYs, “Hips Don’t Lie” was nominated for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals that year. Shakira has won three GRAMMYs in total and earned six nominations; Jean also holds three trophies, and he’s been nominated 10 times.
