Miley Cyrus Suffered from Panic Attacks While Filming on Netflix’s Black Mirror

Miley Cyrus opened up about the issues that plagued her while filming her Black Mirror episode for Netflix.

Black Mirror may be a futuristic science fiction show, but the majority of the conflicts the Netflix hit series tackles are real and present in our daily lives. For Miley Cyrus, things got even more realistic while she was filming an episode for season five, since it was not only her character that was suffering, she was too.

Since its very first season, the show created by Charlie Booker has featured a long list of popular stars to play the main characters in every episode, and the Disney alum joined the show for episode three of season 5, Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too. Establishing a very intentional connection between the singer’s real story and her past as Hannah Montana in the House of Mouse, the story focuses on a teen girl who’s a fan of the pop artist of the moment, Ashley O. That’s why, for her birthday she receives an AI toy that imitates her idol.

Meanwhile, the real Ashley is not enjoying the life of a major music star, dealing with depression and the terrible pressure that comes with being famous.

She starts to rebel against her manager, who ends up putting medication in Ashley’s food that puts her in a coma. Through the toy, Ashley manages to communicate with the girl that owns it and asks for help. But Ashley O’s tragedy was nothing compared with the one Cyrus was facing on real life.

Miley Cyrus’ House Burnt Down While She Was on Black Mirror’s Set

In one of the videos from her TikTok series Used to Be Young, Cyrus revealed that when wildfires ripped through Malibu in 2018, her house was burnt down. At the time, she was filming Black Mirror and suffered from panic attacks due to the stress of it all.

“I was filming Black Mirror and while I was there the fires happened in Malibu. I was in South Africa but [the episode] was taking place in Malibu, so it was just a real trip. Two or three years later after this happened, I didn’t understand, but I had this anxiety attack with a vision attached where I was strapped down to a gurney. I would have these dreams any time I would go to perform, and I thought that was just an anxious vision that made no sense… But actually, as my house was burning I was strapped to a gurney with my hands locked in handcuffs strapped to a bed [filming Black Mirror].”

Miley Cyrus rose to fame when she was cast as Miley Stewart aka Hannah Montana in the popular Disney Channel series of the same name, which premiered in 2006, as part of a golden generation of productions that included High School Musical, The Wizards of Waverly Place and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. In the series, Miley played a regular girl going through adolescence who’s also maintaining a double life as the biggest pop star in the world.
