Shakira Makes the Case for Bringing Back a Polarizing Skirt Styling Trend From the Aughts

Perhaps you thought we’d seen the last of the skirt-over-pants trend back in the 2000s. But Shakira is now making a case for bringing the polarizing styling choice back into the mainstream.

On July 6 the singer was pH๏τographed at the Fendi couture show in Paris for Fashion Week, wearing a pair of tailored black trousers under a pleated black schoolgirl skirt. Shakira topped her throwback look with a cream-colored sleeveless top, pointed-toe pumps, and a ɴuᴅᴇ handbag from the Italian brand.

Back in the aughts, the skirt-over-pants look was seen mostly on Disney and Nickelodeon teen stars like Ashley Tisdale and Miley Cyrus. These days the style is making its slow return to red carpets and runway-show front rows on the likes of Katie Holmes, who wore a minidress over jeans to the 2022 Jingle Ball, and Euphoria star Alexa Demie, who topped her leather Balenciaga cargo pants with a leather Balenciaga miniskirt during Paris Fashion Week in 2022.

But Shakira is clearly all about making a statement with her fashion these days, sometimes literally. On July 5, the “Wherever, Whenever” singer attended the Viktor & Rolf show wearing a crisp white jacket adorned with a three-dimensional message that read, simply, “No.” As for what she’s trying to say by reviving a controversial trend from two decades ago, well, that’s still very much up for interpretation.
