Where it all went wrong for Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus: Her attraction to women, fights about baby plans and singer’s big career ambitions
Miley Cyrus and her husband Liam Hemsworth have split after less than a year of marriage.
In a statement to People the singer, 26, announced she had separated from the Australian actor, 29, to ‘focus on themselves and their careers’, and just hours earlier Miley was spotted kissing Brody Jenner’s ex-wife Kaitlynn Carter during a girls’ getaway to Lake Como, Italy.
With just seven months of marriage under their belt, where did it all go wrong in this rollercoaster romance?
It has been three months since Miley and Liam were last seen together at the Met Gala, in New York City, in May earlier this year.
Now it’s emerged the couple drifted apart amid new claims the newly married lovebirds have been trying to make their romance work for months.
A source told E! news: ‘They have been trying to make it work for months now but haven’t felt they were connecting on the level they were feeling when they got married last year. It’s been a rough year.
‘She has been ready to put out music and be back in the game touring and performing. They really grew apart. Miley and Liam have still been communicating and it wasn’t a messy split but they haven’t decided they are at different points in their lives currently.’
Meanwhile insiders have claimed a major source of conflict between the pair was baby plans.
The famous couple reportedly called it quits in July 2018 over an argument about baby plans. A source told OK! Australia at the time that while Liam, 29, was eager to settle down and become a father, Miley, 26, wasn’t ready.
‘He wants kids and doesn’t want to keep putting it off but it’s not quite the timeline Miley had in mind… he is left heartbroken,’ the source said.
‘Miley put off plans for the wedding and Liam was growing tired of it… They haven’t been getting along in recent months.’
The insider added: ‘[She] didn’t really want to get married. It’s something that everyone else seemed to get but Liam. [His] family had been begging him to see the light for a long time, but he had faith in Miley. Now he feels like an idiot.’
At the time, the couple denied split rumours, with Liam posting a video to Instagram of the pair driving along in a car together before he scared her with a funny prank.
The couple appeared to be well and truly back on track, and in December 2018 the quietly wed in a small ceremony in Tennessee.
However Miley’s comments about not having babies with Liam in an interview with US Elle magazine in July this year, suggested not all was well in their romance.
While the singer attributed her decision to the dangers of global warming, observers wondered whether there was more to the story.
Miley said she refuses to reproduce until ‘we live on an earth with fish in the water’ while she also stated that she was very much still attracted to women, and branded her marriage ‘confusing, complex and modern’.
‘I’m in a hetero relationship, but I still am very Sєxually attracted to women… I definitely don’t fit into a stereotypical wife role. I don’t even like that word.
‘I think it’s very confusing to people that I’m married. But my relationship is unique.
‘And I don’t know that I would ever publicly allow people in there because it’s so complex, and modern, and new that I don’t think we’re in a place where people would get it…
‘I mean, do people really think that I’m at home in a f**king apron cooking dinner? I’m in a hetero relationship, but I still am very Sєxually attracted to women…
‘I made a partner decision. This is the person I feel has my back the most. I definitely don’t fit into a stereotypical wife role. I don’t even like that word.’
The Climb star has been open about being quotes about being ‘queer’ in a hetero relationship, and described her marriage as ‘new age’.
She said in Vanity Fair’s March issue: ‘The reason that people get married sometimes can be old-fashioned, but I think the reason we got married isn’t old-fashioned — I actually think it’s kind of New Age.
‘We’re redefining, to be f***ing frank, what it looks like for someone that’s a queer person like myself to be in a hetero relationship.
‘A big part of my pride and my idenтιтy is being a queer person. What I preach is: People fall in love with people, not gender, not looks, not whatever.
‘What I’m in love with exists on almost a spiritual level. It has nothing to do with Sєxuality. Relationships and partnerships in a new generation — I don’t think they have so much to do with Sєxuality or gender.’
On their union, The Hunger Games actor admitted that while he was ‘lucky’ to be with Miley, marriage made their relationship feel ‘different’.
He told Extra last year: ‘We’ve been together for the better part of 10 years, so it’s same-same, but different [being married] I guess. But it’s all wonderful and I feel lucky to be with her.’
In possibly the biggest red flag about the status of their marriage, the screen star was pictured without his wedding ring in July – just days after Miley’s Glastonbury announcement that she’s ‘f***ing sick of men’.
Miley was also spotted without her band in a slew of Instagram snaps uploaded to her page over the past few days.
Back in October 2016, the musician admitted she doesn’t like her engagement ring from Liam.
In an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Miley shared: ‘It really isn’t my aesthetic, but I’ll wear it because you love me.
She also joked that it was ‘weird’ to have ‘real jewelry,’ as most of the pieces she usually wears are ‘made out of gummy bears and cotton candy.’
Liam’s ring-free display comes as a surprise as he previously gushed about his symbol.
On being married, he told E!: ‘It’s great — the ring fits. It’s great, it’s an awesome thing to get through.
‘We’ve been together for a long time and it felt like it was the right time to do it … Not much about the relationship changes [after marriage], but you kind of have these sort of — the husband and wife thing, it’s great.
‘I’m loving it. I’m really, really happy and grateful to be in the position I’m in’, the hunk added.
On Friday, before news of her split from Liam broke, Miley was seen getting cosy with Kaitlynn in the Italian sunshine as they continue to enjoy their lavish getaway.
The Hannah Montana star appeared to be getting extremely hands-on with the blogger, 30, as they enjoyed a spot of sunbathing together.
Kaitlynn and Miley seemed unphased by those who were watching them get cosy, as they relaxed together in the sunny weather.
Just hours before the shock split was confirmed on Sunday, the Party In The USA hitmaker uploaded a pH๏τo of herself holidaying in Italy.
The singer’s 97M followers took to the comments section to ask why she wasn’t wearing her sparkler.
‘Where is her wedding ring?’ one wrote, while a different concerned fan added: ‘She’s not wearing her ring wtf!??’
A full statement on the couple’s split was released on Sunday, which read: ‘Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers.
‘They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.’
Liam is yet to comment on the split and he was spotted in Byron Bay, Australia, with his famous brother Chris earlier this week on Monday.
Miley and Liam met in 2009 on the set of romantic comedy The Last Song, and had an on-again-off-again romance for years.
Liam finally proposed to the blonde in 2012, but the pair broke up their engagement a year later.
They rekindled their romance in 2015 before tying the knot in December 2018 during a private ceremony at the Cyrus family home in Tennessee.
