Dolly Parton, Miley Cyrus team up for new version of ‘Wrecking Ball’

It’s the new single off “Rock Star,” the country music legend’s forthcoming album of rock & roll covers.

Dolly Parton wants to show her goddaughter how it’s done.

To that end, the musical legend has teamed up with Miley Cyrus for a fresh version of “Wrecking Ball,” a new single released Friday from Rock Star, Parton’s upcoming album of rock covers. In this case, the track is not technically a cover since Cyrus herself shows up on the song, ᴀssisting her godmother with the chorus.

Parton’s album Rock Star, due out next month, is full of revamped takes on classic rock songs — proof of the full extent of the country queen’s musical range. Unlike with most covers, though, the singer has recruited many of the tracks’ original artists to help her out.

Parton’s version of the Police’s “Every Breath You Take” will feature Sting. Her cover of Blondie’s “Heart of Glᴀss” will boast the band’s iconic frontwoman, Debbie Harry. And “Let It Be” will include both surviving Beatles members, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.

The musician enlisted some contemporary stars, too. Lizzo joins her for Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” while Chris Stapleton pops up on Bob Seger’s “Night Moves,” and Pink and Brandi Carlile help with the Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.”

Parton has said releasing her own rock album has been a career goal.

“My husband’s a huge rock & roll fan, and he’s often said, ‘You ought to make a rock album sometime in your career,'” Parton told EW earlier this year. “And then when that all happened and they went ahead and put me in [the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame] anyway, I thought, ‘Well, I’m not gonna miss this chance, so I am doing a rock album.'”
