Shakira’s “Soltera” is the new single ladies’ anthem
On Wednesday night, Colombian pop star Shakira released her new song “Soltera” ahead of her upcoming tour for her latest album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran. She talks about how freeing it is to be a single woman over a chill, upbeat melody.
In her chorus, Shakira confidently sings, “Estoy suelta y, ahora puedo hacer lo que quiera” which roughly translates to “Now that I’m free, I can do whatever I want.” Over a tropical melody, Shakira appropriately paints a summertime story as a single woman who isn’t tied down and is selective about the men she gives attention to. The beat and lyrics together make listeners feel like they’re having a fun beach day with her.
The Latina icon spares nothing when she beautifully sings, “Nadie va decirme como me debo comporta” over a pulsating beat to make it clear that she doesn’t care what others think of her. She’s also transparent about dressing well for herself when she sings “Me puse poca ropa pa’ mostrar la piel” as the bᴀss goes up. Shakira continues her summer vibe with the lyric “Aún huele a verano aquí.”
The song ends with a group of women having fun singing “Se pasa rico soltera” in harmony even after the beat has ended. Their joy as they chant about the fun, single life is contagious and makes you want to play the song again.
Lately, Shakira has released charting breakup anthems in collaboration with other artists like Bizarrap on “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” and fellow Colombian singer Karol G on “TQG.” However, Shakira changes her narrative from becoming stronger after a breakup to embracing the benefits of the single life with “Soltera.”
