‘American Horror Story’ wins first Emmy Award in 7 years — thanks, Kim Kardashian!

At this weekend’s Creative Arts ceremony, FX’s long-running “American Horror Story” series surprised awards pundits when it won its first Emmy Award in seven years. The victory came in the contemporary costumes category for the 12th season, “American Horror Story: Delicate,” which had extra buzz this year because it famously featured Kim Kardashian dressed to kill (literally) as publicist-turned-demon Siobhan Corbyn.

This marks the 17th overall Emmy for “AHS,” with its last win being for the prosthetic makeup in Season 6’s “Roanoke.” See all of the “American Horror Story” Emmy wins through the years in our updated pH๏τo gallery below (or click here for direct access). The spooky show has notably garnered four acting wins so far for Jessica Lange (both “AHS: Murder House” and “AHS: Coven”), James Cromwell (“AHS: Asylum”) and Kathy Bates (“AHS: Coven”).

Kim Kardashian Gets Mixed Reactions For 'AHS' Performance

“AHS: Delicate” tells the story of young actress named Anna Victoria Alcott (Emma Roberts) getting pregnant with a demon child during awards season. She knows something is wrong with her pregnancy, but her husband Dexter Harding Jr. (Matt Czuchry) gaslights her into thinking everything is A-okay. In the shocking season finale, it’s revealed that virtually every woman in Anna’s life, including Siobhan (Kardashian), is actually a well-dressed demonic cult member with the goal of breeding super-powered children that will kill all men.

The Emmy for Best Contemporary Costumes for a Limited Series/Movie was awarded to Jacqueline Demeterio (costume designer), Jessica Zavala ( ᴀssistant costume designer), Jose Bantula (costume supervisor), Jillian Daidone (costume supervisor) and Jennifer Salim (ᴀssistant costume designer). The artisans were specifically recognized for their work in the “AHS: Delicate” finale, тιтled “The Auteur.” The season was written by Halley Feiffer and was based on Danielle Valentine‘s novel “Delicate Condition.”

“Emma’s character was definitely quiet luxury,” Demeterio recently told Bazaar about the costumes. “For her, my inspiration was very Carolyn Bessette and ’90s Gwyneth Paltrow. We haven’t really seen Emma like this before. The movie ‘Tár was’ referenced a lot, too. For Kim’s character, Siobhan, Schiaparelli was a big inspiration. A lot of couture, sculpted, strong pieces. A lot of leather trenches. Against the quiet luxury of Emma, what Kim wears is a great contrast.”

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Ryan Murphy‘s “American Horror Story” has completely revamped the Emmy Awards. Prior to the show’s launch, the miniseries categories were essentially dying out. But “AHS” proved there was still interest in stories with a beginning, middle and end, and told over several weeks as opposed to several years. Other similar anthology series soon started cropping up, including “True Detective,” “Fargo” and “American Crime.”
