Andrew Garfield’s Girlfriend Kate Tomas Addresses the ‘Misogynistic’ Reactions to Their Relationship

“It’s frustrating that no matter how accomplished or impactful a woman is, it’s always going to be more interesting if they are in a relationship with a man,” Tomas told ‘The Sunday Times’

Months after she was first linked to Andrew Garfield, Kate Tomas is giving her two cents on the “misogynistic” reactions to their romance.

In a new interview with The Sunday Times published on Sunday, July 21, the author, podcast host and self-described “spiritual mentor” called out the public’s “frustrating” tendency to focus on her relationship with the We Live in Time actor over her career accomplishments.

“It’s frustrating that no matter how accomplished or impactful a woman is, it’s always going to be more interesting if they are in a relationship with a man,” Tomas, 42, told the U.K. outlet. “I don’t want to sit under anybody’s shadow.”

Tomas also discussed the spotlight that has been thrust upon her since she began dating Garfield — and, more specifically, the paparazzi.

“They will take maybe 150 pictures, then they choose the four where you look worst,” she told The Sunday Times.

Perhaps even more frustrating, she said, is the “misogynistic nature” of the interest in her as Garfield’s girlfriend, which manifests in “criticism of how a woman looks” and “what [she] does for work.”

This interest has also taken the form of tabloid reporters appearing on her neighbors’ doorsteps and inquiring about her personality.

Tomas — who got a “f— politeness” tattoo to reject the notion that women should “please others over their own safety” — said the reporters have inquired about whether or not she’s “a good person.”

Her response? “I don’t care,” she told The Sunday Times.

Garfield and Tomas were first linked in March 2024 when they were pH๏τographed holding hands in Malibu, California, while out on what appeared to be a double date with Phoebe Bridgers and Bo Burnham.

At the time, reps for Garfield and Tomas did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

The actor — who is known to keep his romances out of the public eye — was previously linked to model Alyssa Miller from 2021 to 2022, and, notably, his Amazing Spider-Man costar Emma Stone in the 2010s.

Tomas, according to The Sunday Times, recently got divorced for the fourth time.
