Diane Keaton ‘didn’t even know’ Justin Bieber ahead of surprise music video appearance but had ‘the most fun’ on set

Hollywood star Diane Keaton has confessed that she wasn’t actually any kind of ‘Belieber’ ahead of appearing in Justin Bieber’s music video for Ghost – but is absolutely delighted that she did.

Keaton, 77, stunned us all when she starred as a grieving widow and grandmother to the chart-topper back in 2021, in a storyline which saw her character trying to move on from the loss of her husband.

Fans were beyond thrilled to see her in the three-and-a-half-minute video, with one even joking that casting Keaton was Bieber’s ‘true purpose’.

The Annie Hall Oscar-winning actress is currently promoting her upcoming film Book Club: The Next Chapter and took the time to reminisce on the experience.

When asked about the lovely surprise, she responded: ‘Are you kidding? I couldn’t believe it. This was like one of those things that happens [and] you’re going, “I’m what?”.’

‘And of course, it was so much fun, it couldn’t have been more fun. I can’t believe it. I still can’t believe it,’ she admitted.

However, the Something’s Gotta Give actress also revealed that she ‘didn’t even know’ the Peaches singer ahead of filming, nor his music really.‘No, I hadn’t been a fan,’ she told Zooms

‘I mean, I didn’t even know him. I knew the music a little and I liked the music, but I wasn’t a fan exactly – so you know, I don’t have music pouring in my ears all the time.

‘I don’t know why me, I still don’t understand. I don’t know how, but I loved it,’ she said, before generously adding: ‘I wish you could have been there!’

So do we.

After the fact, Keaton described appearing in the music video as ‘an honour’ on The Ellen DeGeneres Show – which is where she and Bieber actually first met in 2015, foreshadowing the unlikely pairing for Ghost.

At the time, the screen icon did in fact describe herself as a ‘Belieber’, gushing over a topless picture of the ‘gorgeous’ singer before being slightly mortified when he popped out to surprise her.

It sounds like that was the extent of their interaction until the 29-year-old reached out to Keaton to ask her to appear in his music video.

Discussing her career ahead of her new movie’s release, the actress refused to agree to the label of ‘screen icon’, despite the classic status of many of her films, which include The Godfather and Father of the Bride movies, and the longevity of her 50-year career.

‘I’ll not get carried away with that. It’s not true, I am not a screen icon, but I have had the pleasure of acting in movies,’ she modestly responded.

In Book Club: The Next Chapter, Keaton returns as Diane (handily) alongside Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen as friends bonded over 40 years through their monthly meetings.

The sequel to the 2018 movie sees the pals head on holiday to Itly with one another for the fun girls’ trip they never had.
