Miley Cyrus Just Reflected On Her 2021 New Year’s Eve Wardrobe Malfunction And Said “Show Your Boobs And You Get Renewed”

Cyrus was back the following year for a second New Year’s Eve special on NBC.

Miley Cyrus has never been a stranger to wearing a controversial outfit, but one of her more recent headline-making looks was never intended to stir up drama.

In 2021, Miley Cyrus cohosted a New Year’s Eve special with Pete Davidson on NBC. She wore a series of outfits, but the shimmering two-piece she wore while performing “Party in the U.S.A.” stole the show, unexpectedly.

During the performance, the chain holding the top together ripped, leaving Cyrus to frantically cover herself up on live TV. The moment made major headlines at the time.

Turns out, the mishap had a silver lining. On Thursday, Cyrus said the wardrobe malfunction may have actually helped her get renewed for a second New Year’s Eve special.

“It actually ended up being incredible press for your girl,” Cyrus said in a British Vogue YouTube video, breaking down several of her memorable looks.

“What is a live TV performance with everything going right? Live TV is a tight-rope walk. They want to see you dangle, but they don’t want to see you fall,” she said.

“We had promoted the show as, ‘It’s Miley Cyrus and Pete Davidson. They’re so wild. You never know what’s going to happen.’ Comparably, to Pete, I’m pretty classy. And the ratings were skyrocketing,” she continued.

It doesn’t seem Cyrus remains all that upset about the moment. “Show your boobs and you get renewed. Dolly [Parton] taught me that,” she said in the video. In fact, Parton went on to cohost the New Year’s Eve show the next year, replacing Davidson.

Other iconic outfits Cyrus relived for British Vogue included her 2013 Met Gala look by Marc Jacobs. The theme was punk that year.

She also talked about her infamous teddy bear costume at the 2013 VMAs. “[It] was extremely controversial and made a lot of people angry,” she said.

One of the more recent looks she discussed was the hooded gold dress she wore earlier this year in the “Flowers” music video. “It wasn’t saying too much. It spoke for itself,” she said.

Here’s hoping Cyrus is back again this New Year’s Eve, controversy and all.
