Miley Cyrus Opens Up About Traumatic Black Mirror Scene

Miley Cyrus discusses a traumatic scene which she filmed in the Black Mirror episode “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too.”

Miley Cyrus shares how a scene she filmed in the Black Mirror episode “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too” went on to traumatize her.

Cyrus talked about the triggering Black Mirror scene in her “Used to be Young” TikTok video series. “I was filming Black Mirror and while I was there, the Woolsey Fires happened in Malibu. And I was in South Africa but it was taking place in Malibu so it was just a real trip,” Cyrus explained. “Probably two or three years after this happened I didn’t understand, but I would have this anxiety attack with a vision attached that I would be strapped down to a gurney.”

“So I would have these dreams anytime I would go to perform, and I thought that was just an anxious vision that made no sense,” Cyrus continued. She eventually realized that her anxious vision came from a particular Black Mirror moment which she filmed while the Woolsey Fire had burned her home to the ground. “But actually as my house was burning down I was strapped to a gurney with my hands locked in handcuffs strapped to a bed.”

The World of Black Mirror

Originally released in 2019, Miley Cyrus’ Black Mirror episode, “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too” was the third and final episode of season 5. Series creator Charlie Brooker wrote the episode and Anne Sewitsky took on the directing duties. Miley Cyrus plays Ashley O, a pop star whose music career gets exploited by her controlling aunt and manager. The narrative also follows Rachel as she acquires Ashley Too, a robotic doll based on Ashley O’s personality. With the help of Ashley Too and her sister, Jack, Rachel eventually frees Ashley O from her aunt’s tight grip.

The sixth Black Mirror season came out in June with a total of five episodes: “Joan is Awful,” “Loch Henry,” “Beyond the Sea,” “Mazey Day” and “Demon 79.” Season six stars include Salma Hayek, Michael Cera, Annie Murphy, Zazie Beetz, Aaron Paul and Josh Hartnett. There hasn’t been any word on if the anthology series has been renewed for a seventh installment.

All six seasons of Black Mirror are available to stream on Netflix.
