Miley Cyrus’s ‘Party In The U.S.A.’ Returns To The Hot 100–Here’s Why That’s So Impressive

Miley Cyrus is having a huge year. She conquered the Hot 100 chart early in 2023 with her smash “Flowers,” and that track is still going strong on the ranking of the most-consumed tunes in the U.S. But the continued success of that cut is not her most impressive showing this time around.

The pop singer’s “Party in the U.S.A.” returns to the Hot 100 this week, reappearing at No. 50 on the newly-published list. It’s always impressive whenever an older cut finds its way back to the tally, but Cyrus’s current achievement is even more noteworthy considering one Billboard rule.

The chart company insтιтuted what are called the recurrent rules several years ago. Those rules remove tracks from the Hot 100 if they have spent a certain number of weeks on the ranking and fall below a specific position. For example, a single will be forcibly taken off the Hot 100 if it dips below No. 50 after 20 weeks, or below No. 25 after 52 weeks—a full year on the list.

“Party in the U.S.A.” could only return to the Hot 100 if it ranked as one of the 50 most-consumed songs in America. So, even if interest and activity around the cut surged, if it was the fifty-first most popular tune in the country, it still wouldn’t be present on the chart. These rules make it harder for tracks that have already had their time on the list to find their way back, and only the most popular can manage the feat, like Cyrus’s win has this time around.

In addition to soaring back to the Hot 100, “Party in the U.S.A.” also returns to the Digital Song Sales chart. The track stands as the seventh-bestselling cut in the U.S. this frame. The cut explodes in popularity once again thanks to the Fourth of July holiday. Millions of Americans played the tune on streaming platforms, purchased it and radio DJs spun it regularly. Despite the fact that the single was initially released in 2009, Americans still love it…even if only at a certain time of the year.

“Party in the U.S.A.” is one of three Cyrus songs currently present on the Hot 100. The singer’s recent chart-topper “Flowers” dips slightly to No. 5, pushed down by Olivia Rodrigo’s brand new No. 1 debut “Vampire.” All the way at the bottom of the chart is her current single “Jaded,” the third promotional cut taken from her new album Endless Summer Vacation.
