Watch Miley Cyrus and Jimmy Fallon Sing “Jolene” in Disguise in the NYC Subway

Green Day wasn’t the first band to take over 30 Rock’s train stop with Jimmy Fallon: Miley Cyrus turned the subway into a Party in the U.S.A. while wearing a clever disguise.

You might ᴀssume you’d recognize the sound of Miley Cyrus’s powerhouse voice if she was singing mere steps away from you. But that wasn’t immediately the case when the “Used to Be Young” singer donned a long dark wig and cowboy hat to perform in a NYC subway station directly underneath 30 Rock, home of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

In the wake of a surprise subway stop Green Day concert that shocked and delighted commuters on January 16, 2024, fans of the former The Voice Coach are resurfacing the 2017 clip of Cyrus and Jimmy Fallon when they busked underground.

There was no crowd gathered when Cyrus and a bearded Fallon (who went by “Bart” while dressed in his getup) walked through the turnstile to take their places behind two mics. Cyrus yelled “yeee haw!” as a drummer backed them up on a bucket and a guitarist plucked the notes of a cover Cyrus has become well known for: “Jolene,” originally written and performed by Cyrus’s godmother, Dolly Parton.

It didn’t take long for Cyrus’s unmistakeable vocals to turn heads, and a smiling crowd soon gathered to watch the show and take videos on their phone. At the end of the song, Cyrus and Fallon whipped off their wigs for a reveal, announcing themselves as the crowd cheered.

The pair followed it up with Cyrus’s 2009 hit “Party in the U.S.A.”—or, as they tweaked the lyrics, “Party in the Subway.” Cyrus and Fallon did a hip bump as the audience sang along (while nodding their heads like yeah, obviously).
