What To Know About Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Lawrence, And That Gold Dress

Miley Cyrus sent the internet into a frenzy with her gold dress in “Flowers,” so what’s the connection to Jennifer Lawrence?

In January 2023, Miley Cyrus released her song “Flowers,” which quickly turned into a global hit. It also easily became her most successful track to date as it remained on the Hot 100 chart and Billboard charts for weeks. Since the song’s release, there’s even talk of Cyrus getting another Grammy nod.

That said, Flowers hasn’t been without controversy. For starters, some fans are claiming that Bruno Mars deserves a credit for the song, even if the singer didn’t collaborate with Cyrus on the track. On the other hand, many are also convinced that Flowers is meant to be a subtle diss toward Cyrus’ ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth and that the proof is in that gold dress that the singer wears in the video.

Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” Is Assumed To Be About Liam Hemsworth

Sure, there are singers who are known to ‘dedicate’ songs to their past loves. And with “Flowers,” fans can’t help but think that the song is all about Hemsworth and everything that happened while the actor and Cyrus were still together.

For starters, the song’s first lines mention building a home and then watching it burn, which seems to refer to the former couple’s Malibu home, which burned in 2018 due to a wildfire.

As for the chorus, some claim that it was written in response to Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man,” which is a song that Hemsworth reportedly dedicated to Cyrus.

And if that’s not enough to convince some people, Cyrus is also shown wearing a suit jacket towards the end of the music video, which is similar to what Hemsworth was wearing when the couple appeared at the premiere of Avengers: Endgame.

While the couple posed for pH๏τos, Hemsworth seemingly told Cyrus off after she pretended to lick him in front of the camera. At the same time, Cyrus also chose to drop the track on January 12, which was the day right before her ex-husband’s birthday.

Miley Wore An Iconic Gold Dress, But It Looked Familiar

For the song’s video, Cyrus opted for a dazzling gold hooded cut-out gown and there’s a reason why some may recognize the dress. The designer behind the gown is none other than Yves Saint Laurent and Cyrus has been known to wear pieces from the distinguished French fashion house for years.

And while the singer typically wears Yves Saint Laurent’s newer pieces (particularly the ones designed by its creative director, Anthony Vaccarello), Cyrus opted to go vintage for her “Flowers” music video. As eagle-eyed fashionistas may have determined, the singer’s hooded gown came from the fashion house’s autumn/winter 1991/92 runway collection.

Since filming the music video, however, it’s unclear if the gown remains in Cyrus’ possession or if it’s been returned to Yves Saint Laurent. The only thing that’s certain is that the singer’s fans still can’t get enough of it, and it may have something to do with an ᴀssumption that the dress comes with hidden meanings.

Jennifer Lawrence Wore A Similar Dress, But What Does It Mean?

Years before Cyrus released her “Flowers” music video, Jennifer Lawrence also once made a public appearance in a gold cutout gown. Back in March 2012, the stage was set for Lawrence to become Hollywood’s newest breakout star thanks to her hit film The Hunger Games.

At the premiere, the Oscar winner showed up in a gold lamé gown by American fashion designer Prabal Gurung, and it was all anybody could talk about.

Now, both women wearing a gold dress would easily seem like a coincidence but lately, there has been talk that Cyrus’ decision to wear a gold dress in her video was meant to be a subtle dig at the actress too. Fans are pushing this theory since Hemsworth famously starred opposite Lawrence in the franchise.

Not only that, but it also seems that something may have happened between the co-stars behind the scenes even if Hemsworth was supposedly with Cyrus at that time.

The actress seemingly admitted to this during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. While on the show, Cohen confronted Lawrence with rumors that she and Hemsworth were spotted having PDA at the Waverly Inn.

When asked if the co-stars ever shared a kiss away from the cameras, Lawrence said, “Liam and I grew up together. Liam’s real H๏τ. What would you have done?” The actress also later confirmed, “Yeah, I have.”

More recently though, Lawrence appeared on Cohen’s show to clarify that Hemsworth and Cyrus were broken up when the kiss happened. As for Hemsworth, the actor has never commented on his PDA with the Oscar winner.

Since the release of the “Flowers” video, however, Cyrus’ fans believe that the singer got the last laugh. On social media, one posted about bowing down to the singer as the “Queen of silent but ᴅᴇᴀᴅly revenge.”

Cyrus herself once took to social media saying, “I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating.” The singer also said that would “always” love Hemsworth.

It’s also worth noting that Cyrus and Lawrence aren’t the only women linked to Hemsworth who have worn a gold dress. Model Gabriella Brooks, the actor’s current girlfriend, wore a gold dress to the premiere of Hemsworth’s film, Poker Face, back in 2022. That premiere also saw the couple make their relationship red carpet official.
