WHY DID TAYLOR SWIFT FANS GET ROASTED BY MICHAEL CHE ON SNL WEEKEND UPDATE?

Taylor Swift has been roped into the latest Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live (SNL) in light of the recent Live Nation hearings.

Weekend Update, SNL’s news-centered segment, sees hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che take a look at the week’s H๏τ topics. From Trump’s Facebook being reinstated to George Santos’s drag performances, the latest Weekend Update focused its lens on Washington.

But it was a comment about Taylor Swift fans that has caused the most hubbub after this week’s episode. So, what did Michael Che say about Taylor during the latest Weekend Update?

WHAT DID MICHAEL CHE SAY ABOUT TAYLOR SWIFT FANS ON WEEKEND UPDATE?
Weekend Update anchor Michael Che touched on the senate hearings which are taking place this January over last year’s Taylor Swift ticket debacle.

“During the senate hearings investigating Live Nation and their monopoly on ticket sales, fans of Taylor Swift protested outside the Capitol,” Che begins. “Aw, that’s sweet. And only two years after their dads were there.”

The audience reacts with gasps and laughter at the understandably controversial joke.

SENATE QUESTIONS LIVE NATION AFTER TAYLOR SWIFT TICKET FIASCO
On January 24, 2023, Live Nation president Joe Berchtold appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee for the hearing ‘That’s The Ticket: Promoting Compeтιтion and Protecting Consumers in Live Entertainment’. Live Nation is the parent company of Ticketmaster.

Ticketmaster cited a cyber attack as the root of problems regarding the Taylor Swift ticket sales in a pre-hearing statement. This ‘cyber attack’ relates to the use of bots purchasing tickets. Berchtold apologised “to the many disappointed fans as well as to Ms Swift” before admitting that “In hindsight there are several things we could have done better.”

Taylor Swift fans appeared outside the US Capitol during the hearing, keeping a close eye on the hearing’s outcomes, the New York Times reports.

TAYLOR SWIFT HAS FEATURED ON SNL WEEKEND UPDATE BEFORE
While Michael Che’s recent gag about the Taylor Swift fans has raised eyebrows, it is not the first time the Weekend Update anchor has used news about the singer-songwriter for his segment.

Last year, Che addressed Taylor Swift’s decision to re-record her album, Fearless. “If I released an album of things I wrote when I was 18 I would be fired immediately,” Che joked.

Colin Jost also used Taylor-related news for a segment in 2021.

“Well guys, I think the lesson we all learned this week is never break up with Taylor Swift,” Jost joked. “Or she will sing about you for 10 minutes on national television. At the very least, return the scarf.”

This joke followed Taylor Swift’s performance of All Too Well (10 Minute Version) which she performed on Saturday Night Live in November 2021.
